Kloster Tölz

The origins of a Franciscan monastery in Tölz date back to 1330. The later complex, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was established in 1624. Its foundation was closely linked to the reform efforts of Duke Maximilian I, who aimed to consolidate the Bavarian Franciscan monasteries into their own province to strengthen his influence. After years of negotiations, including through his ambassador Giovanni Battista Cesare Crivelli, Pope Urban VIII granted approval. Thus, on March 1, 1625, the Bavarian Reformist Province of the Franciscans was created, and the monastery was staffed with reformed friars from Northern Italy. A plaque at the church entrance commemorates them. The convent also operated a hospice. Due to strong popular demand, the original monastery church was expanded in 1660/61. A St. Anthony's Chapel, built in 1660 and decorated with stucco in 1684, had to be demolished in 1733 to allow for further enlargements of the church and monastery. In the course of secularization under King Max I Joseph, the monastery was dissolved on January 25, 1802. The library, containing 7000 volumes, was almost entirely lost. King Ludwig I permitted the re-admission of the Franciscans on August 15, 1827, after which the monastery was re-established on December 1, 1828. In 2008, the Franciscans finally abandoned the monastery.

The former monastery is situated in Bad Tölz, a town in the Bavarian district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 656 meters above sea level.

The monastery church houses an organ built in 1998 by the Vleugels organ building company. The instrument features 35 stops with 1912 pipes, distributed across two manuals and a pedalboard.
