Forteresse de Salses

At the end of the 15th century, after French troops plundered the village and castle of Salses, King Ferdinand III of Castile and León ordered the construction of the fortress. Between 1497 and 1504, the complex was built in record time. Its strategic location at the gateway to Catalonia was intended to repel further attacks and serve as a base for operations. Its revolutionary construction made it resistant to artillery. Already in 1503, the still unfinished fortress withstood a French siege. After the Peace of 1544, the region experienced a century of peace, but military innovations led to the fortress's architectural superiority waning. During the Thirty Years' War, it was besieged three times and fell to France in 1642. The Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659 shifted the border, causing the fortress to lose its strategic importance. An attempt by Vauban to demolish it failed due to its massive construction. It later served as an observation post, state prison, and gunpowder magazine before being declared a historical monument in 1886.

The Forteresse de Salses is situated in Salses-le-Château in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, Languedoc-Roussillon region, France, at an elevation of approximately 12 meters above sea level.
