Fort Pickens

The construction of Fort Pickens was a direct consequence of the War of 1812, when the U.S. government recognized the need to fortify all important ports in the country. French engineer Simon Bernard was commissioned to build it on Santa Rosa Island. Between 1829 and 1834, the fortress was erected under the supervision of Colonel William H. Chase, using approximately 21.5 million bricks, with much of the labor performed by enslaved people. As the largest of three forts, it secured the harbor entrance, flanked by Fort McRee and Fort Barrancas. After the Mexican-American War, the fort fell into disuse until it regained importance in the run-up to the American Civil War. In January 1861, Lieutenant Adam J. Slemmer decided to use the dilapidated Fort Pickens as the most defensible position. Union troops subsequently evacuated Fort Barrancas and Fort McRee, rendering their supplies and cannons unusable, and retreated to Fort Pickens. Ironically, former construction supervisor William H. Chase, now a Confederate General, was tasked with its capture but failed due to a lack of siege equipment and the constant resupply of Union troops by sea. Thus, Fort Pickens remained in Union hands throughout the Civil War, blocking Confederate access to Pensacola Harbor. Later, from 1886 to 1887, it even served as a prison for Apache chief Geronimo. Military use ended in 1947, after which the facility was partially neglected and altered.

The fortress is located in Warrington, Escambia County, Florida, USA, at an elevation of approximately 6 m above sea level.

Today, Fort Pickens can be visited and is accessible to the public, allowing its historical significance to be experienced.
