Fort Libéria

Following the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, which redefined the French-Spanish border, Villefranche-de-Conflent gained strategic importance as a garrison town. The existing fortifications of the town, continuously expanded since the 11th century, were no longer sufficient against modern weaponry. The famous fortress builder Vauban therefore proposed constructing a new fortress on the mountainside to detect attackers early and effectively defend the town. Despite initial high costs, Vauban was commissioned to build it in 1681, and the fort became operational six years later. Between 1850 and 1856, Napoleon III had the fort massively reinforced to address defensive weaknesses. This period saw the creation of the famous underground passage with 734 steps, connecting the fort to the town. In 1890, the French army abandoned the fort. After serving as a prisoner-of-war camp in World War I and an air surveillance base in World War II, it was sold to an entrepreneur in 1927, who renamed it Fort Libéria. Since 1987, following extensive restoration, it has been open to the public and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.

Fort Libéria is located in Villefranche-de-Conflent in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, in the Aquitaine region of France. It stands at an elevation of approx. 594 meters above sea level.
