The first mention of fortifications on the Hohentwiel dates back to 915. In the early Middle Ages, the site served as a ducal seat and was owned by various noble families, including the Zähringer and Klingenberger. By the early 16th century, Hohentwiel increasingly fell under the influence of Württemberg and once again became a ducal residence. In the following centuries, it was expanded into a Württemberg state fortress. During the Thirty Years' War, the fortress withstood five sieges. After this period, it served as a state prison until it was razed in 1801 during the Second Coalition War. Despite its destruction, the ruin quickly became a popular destination for travelers.
