Fortress Weichselmünde (Twierdza Wisłoujście)

The origins of the fortress date back to the 14th century, when a wooden guardhouse stood at this strategically important location, destroyed by Hussites in 1433. In 1482, a brick lighthouse was erected on the same spot, around which a square fort with four bastions later developed. The Gdańsk architect Anton van Obberghen was significantly involved in the construction. The fortress was the scene of numerous military conflicts, including an unsuccessful siege by King Stefan Báthory in 1577 and the Battle of Oliwa in 1627, during which it fired upon the Swedish fleet. Russian-Saxon, Prussian, and Napoleonic troops also attacked or besieged the fortress. Between 1622 and 1629, it served as a base for the Polish fleet. In the 19th century, the fortress lost its military significance and was later used as a prison and, after World War I, as a sailing club. In 1945, it suffered damage from the Red Army. Since 1974, the fortress has been a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Gdańsk and, due to its importance as one of the few preserved fortresses on the southern Baltic Sea coast, is listed on the World Monuments Watch.

The Wisłoujście Fortress is located in Gdańsk, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship in northern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 8 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the Wisłoujście Fortress and its historical structures today. The complex also hosts a significant bat population, including fringed bats, water bats, and pond bats, which is why it is designated as a Natura 2000 nature reserve.
