Sverresborg Fortress

King Sverre Sigurdsson had Sverresborg built in the mid-1180s, about 250 meters northeast of Bergenhus Fortress. It is believed that the complex had a stone outer wall, while the inner buildings were made of wood. During the Norwegian Civil War era, the fortress was the scene of numerous conflicts and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt by the Baglers. After a major fire in 1248, King Håkon Håkonsson reinforced the complex. A large part of the current structure dates from the 17th century. In August 1665, Sverresborg participated in the Battle of Vågen, and the last known expansions occurred during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1830, a park was created on the former fortress grounds. During World War II, German occupiers used the fortress for anti-aircraft batteries, and after the war, it served as an execution site for war criminals.

Sverresborg Fortress is located in Bergen, in the Hordaland district, in the Westland (Vestlandet) region of Norway. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 19 meters above sea level.

The fortress is now accessible to visitors and can be explored. Parts of the complex are used by the Norwegian military as office space, although the area is open to the public.
