Skansin Fortress
Skansin Fortress, picturesquely situated on a hill overlooking the harbor of Tórshavn, is a historic bulwark in the Faroe Islands. Originally built to defend against pirate attacks, it now offers a unique view over the capital and the surrounding sea.
History+
The origins of Skansin Fortress date back to 1580, when Magnus Heinason had the complex built to protect Tórshavn from pirates after he himself had almost fallen victim to an attack. In 1780, it was expanded, but the fortress suffered repeated destruction throughout its history. From 1940, Skansin served as a military base for British forces.

Skansin Fortress is located in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark. It is situated on an elevated position directly at the harbor, approximately 7 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore the fortress today. On the grounds, two cannons from the British occupation period as well as older Danish cannons are still visible. A lighthouse, the Skansin Lighthouse, towers above the fortress, guiding ships. Its strategically advantageous location also provides an excellent viewpoint over the city and the offshore island of Nólsoy.
