Skansen Kronan Fortress
The Skansen Kronan fortress, a striking octagonal tower, stands majestically on Risåsberget in Gothenburg's Haga district, Sweden. It is one of the city's oldest military installations and an impressive testament to Swedish defensive architecture.
History+
Construction of Gothenburg's defenses began in 1639 under Gustav II Adolf, involving the clearing of forests on the granite hill of Risåsberget. Skansen Kronan emerged as part of a new fortification strategy, replacing the older Älvsborg Fortress. Between 1687 and 1689, the fortress was expanded according to Erik Dahlberg's plans, giving rise to the current tower with its four to five-meter-thick natural stone walls. A copper-clad wooden crown adorned the tower from 1697, later replaced by a gilded copper crown. Although Skansen Kronan was never involved in battles, it was demilitarized in 1806 and later served as a storage and residential building, a prison, and an emergency shelter. From 1904 to 2004, it housed a military museum.
