Șiria Castle
The Șiria Fortress, an imposing 13th-century castle ruin, stands prominently visible in the Vest region of Romania. Its strategic position on a hill made it an important military stronghold for centuries and bears witness to a turbulent past.
History+
The origins of the Șiria Fortress date back to the 13th century. In 1444, the castle briefly came into the possession of John Hunyadi, before passing to Matthias Corvinus in the second half of the 15th century. From 1461 to 1464, the fortress belonged to the Báthory family. During the peasant uprising under Gheorghe Doja in 1514, the fortress was temporarily besieged by the rebels. From 1599 to 1600, it served as a garrison for Mihai Viteazul. A long period of occupation by the Ottomans followed from 1607 to 1693. Finally, in 1784, the Habsburg army destroyed the fortress for strategic reasons.
