Rosenberg Fortress, majestically situated above the Upper Franconian town of Kronach, is an outstanding example of the evolution of defensive architecture in Germany. This impressive complex, surrounded by Baroque fortifications, is one of Bavaria's best-preserved fortresses and, throughout its long history dating back to the 13th century, was never forcibly conquered.
History+
The origins of Rosenberg Fortress can be traced back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, the complex was continuously expanded by the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg, for whom it was one of two state fortresses, alongside Forchheim Fortress. It evolved from a medieval defensive castle into a Renaissance palace and later into a modern fortress complex. Its numerous construction phases reflect the ongoing development of military architecture.
