Paphos Fort is a prominent historical structure on the coast of Cyprus, which once protected the important port of Paphos. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction by various rulers who recognized the strategic importance of this location.
History+
Originally built as a Byzantine structure to defend the harbor, Paphos Fort suffered severe damage from an earthquake in 1222. In the 13th century, it was rebuilt by the Lusignans. A decisive turn occurred in 1570 when the Venetians dismantled the fortress. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island, the structure was rebuilt by them.
