Elfsborg Fortress

As early as 1645, a provisional gun emplacement was established on Kyrkogårdsholmen for the defense of Gothenburg. Two years later, work began on permanent fortifications based on plans by Quartermaster General Johan Wärnschiöldh. Following design changes in 1651, the fortress was realized as a pentagonal bastion with a hornwork behind it. Although still unfinished, it had to be defended in 1657 during the Second Northern War. Construction was not completed until the late 1670s, and after the demolition of the old Älvsborg Fortress in 1661, it received its current name. A tower was added in 1686. Despite its decay in the 1690s, work on the hornwork resumed in 1697. In 1717, the Danish-Norwegian leader Peter Tordenskiold passed the fortress unnoticed but failed in an attack on the Gothenburg fleet and was bombarded by Nya Elfsborg during his retreat. In 1719, Tordenskiold returned and bombarded the fortress from surrounding islands. Despite being understaffed, Commander Johan Lillie refused to surrender. A quickly established position by Georg Bogislaus Staël von Holstein forced Tordenskiold to retreat. The fortress was immediately repaired and by 1744 was the best-maintained fortress in the realm. Between 1762 and 1766, it was equipped with bomb-proof vaults and stone barracks. After a final renovation in 1808, it was well-maintained until it was decommissioned as a fortress in 1869. Later considerations for reconstruction or integration into harbor defense did not lead to renewed military use.
