Munot Fortress

The Munot Fortress, a striking landmark in the heart of Schaffhausen, is an impressive circular fortress dating from the 16th century. Its unique construction, reflecting the transition from medieval castle to modern fortress, makes it a special historical building in Switzerland.
History+
The history of the Munot dates back to 1098, when a fortification called «Annot» or «Unot» existed on this site. The current circular fortress was built between 1563 and 1585, with its design inspired by Albrecht Dürer's rondel fortifications. Despite the high construction costs, equivalent to the value of approximately 800 townhouses, doubts about its military relevance arose shortly after its completion. It served its only defensive function in 1799 during the retreat of French troops. After this episode, the fortress lost its importance and temporarily served as a quarry. From 1826, drawing teacher Johann Jakob Beck championed its preservation, leading to its restoration and the founding of the Munotverein in 1839.
Location+
The Munot Fortress stands at an elevation of approximately 428 m above sea level in Schaffhausen, in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
