History+
Monyak Fortress was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. It played a crucial role in monitoring access to the "Zhelezna Vrata" pass and the medieval city located near the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist. In 1206, the fortress was besieged by Crusaders during the Fourth Crusade. A historically significant event that took place here was the coronation of Henry, brother of the deceased Baldwin of Flanders, as the second and last emperor of the Latin Empire.
