The Fortress Metz-Fort de Queuleu, originally known as Fort Goeben, is a significant historical structure near Metz in Lorraine, France. As part of the inner ring of fortifications around the city, it bears witness to the strategic importance of the region and the eventful history of the Franco-German border.
History+
Earthworks for Fort de Queuleu began in 1867, with construction following a year later. It was built according to French plans in the bastioned system. After the Franco-Prussian War and the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by Germany, the fort was renamed Fort Goeben in 1873 and extensively modernized until 1890 to adapt it to German standards. It was not involved in combat during World War I. After its return to France in 1919, it regained its original name Fort de Queuleu and was deactivated. During World War II, the German Wehrmacht used it as a detention center and later as an SS special camp, where numerous people were imprisoned between 1943 and 1944. After liberation, it again served as a prison for German prisoners of war and others classified as dangerous.
