History+
The origins of Methoni Fortress date back to the 12th century when the Venetians began its construction after expelling local pirates. Along with Koroni Fortress, it served as a crucial hub for maritime traffic, especially en route to the Holy Land. Around 1500, the fortress fell to the Ottomans, who controlled it for over three centuries. In 1828, French troops took over the complex before it was handed over to the Greeks shortly thereafter.
