The Fort can be visited

Fort de Lantin is one of twelve fortresses constructed around the Belgian city of Liège in the late 19th century. As part of a comprehensive defensive ring, it bears witness to the military architecture of its time and is now an accessible historical site.

History+

The first modern fortifications around Liège, including Fort de Lantin, were built between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, located approximately seven kilometers from the city center, were constructed using the then-innovative material concrete and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. Despite their initial reputation as impregnable, the Liège forts quickly succumbed to German attackers and their heavy artillery at the beginning of World War I. After the war, the forts located to the east, north, and south were rebuilt, while the western installations, which included Lantin, were decommissioned from active military service. In World War II, Fort de Lantin no longer played an active role in defensive strategies.
