History+

The first modern fortifications around Liège were constructed between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, including Fort de la Chartreuse, were situated approximately seven kilometers from the city center and were built using the then-novel material concrete, equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. Despite being considered impregnable, the Liège forts quickly succumbed to German attackers at the start of World War I, who destroyed them with heavy artillery like the "Dicke Bertha." After the war, eight of the forts, oriented to the south, east, and north, were rebuilt. The western installations were decommissioned. Additionally, four more fortifications were constructed to the east, at a greater distance from the city.
