History+

The first modern fortresses around Liège, including Fort de Fléron, were constructed between 1880 and 1890 under the direction of Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, with Fléron being one of the larger installations, were positioned approximately seven kilometers from the city center and built entirely from the then-innovative material concrete, equipped with the most modern weaponry. Although considered impregnable at the start of World War I, they quickly succumbed to German attackers and their heavy artillery, such as the “Big Bertha.” After the war, the eight forts facing south, east, and north were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned. Fort de Fléron, which again played a role in World War II, was partially overbuilt after the conflicts.
