Fortifications of Liège-Fort d'Évegnée

The Fortress Liège-Fort d'Évegnée, an integral part of the once mighty ring of fortifications around Liège, stands at approximately 244 meters above sea level in the Walloon region of Belgium. As one of the smaller forts of the original complex, it bears witness to a turbulent history of military architecture and defense strategies.
History+
The first modern fortifications around Liège were built between 1880 and 1890, initiated by Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont. These forts, including d'Évegnée, were positioned about seven kilometers from the city center. They were constructed from the then-innovative material concrete and equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry. Although the forts were considered impregnable at the beginning of World War I, they quickly fell victim to German attackers and their heavy artillery, the “Big Bertha.” After the war, the eastern, northern, and southern forts were rebuilt, while the western installations were decommissioned. In World War II, Fort d'Évegnée did not play a primary role in the early hostilities, which focused on Fort Eben-Emael.
