Fort Lovrijenac

The Lovrijenac Fortress, a striking structure dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, majestically perches on a rock at the edge of Dubrovnik's Old Town in Croatia. This mighty fortification played a crucial role in the city's defense in the past.
History+
Construction of the fortress began as early as the 11th century, possibly around 1018 or 1038, west of the city walls. Sources report that it was built as a swift response to Venetian construction plans at the same strategic location, to protect Dubrovnik from hostile attacks by land and sea. The first documented mention occurred in 1301 with the election of its commander. In the 15th and 16th centuries, extensive reconstructions took place under master builder I. K. Zanchi from Pesaro. Further repairs were necessary after the earthquake of 1667.
Location+
Lovrijenac Fortress is located in Dubrovnik, in the Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija district in the Jadranska Hrvatska region of Croatia. It stands at an elevation of approximately 5 m above sea level.
