Limassol Castle (Κάστρο Λεμεσού)

Limassol Fortress, a prominent structure on the coast of Cyprus, rises in the city of the same name and bears witness to a turbulent past. Originally built in the 13th century on the foundations of older fortifications, it served over the centuries as a strategic point and the scene of significant historical events.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to the 13th century when it was built on the remains of an earlier complex. Its function was versatile: it served as a military fortification, headquarters, and even as a prison. A notable event was the wedding of Richard the Lionheart to Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, which took place here. From 1291, the city and thus the fortress came into the possession of the Knights Hospitaller.
Location+
Limassol Fortress is located in the city of Limassol, in the district of Limassol, within the Republic of Cyprus on the island of Cyprus. It stands at a low elevation of approx. 7 meters above sea level, near the coast.
On site+
Today, the fortress houses a museum dedicated to medieval artifacts, serving as a chronological complement to the Archaeological Museum. The complex has been partially rebuilt and is presented in the state it had under Ottoman rule.
