Küstrin Fortress-Ravelin August-Wilhelm

Küstrin Fortress was constructed in the second half of the 16th century to protect the residential city of Küstrin. Construction began in 1537 with earthworks, which were later reinforced with masonry due to flooding. Between 1631 and 1688, the defense of the eastern fortress walls was significantly strengthened by the construction of several redans and ravelins, including August-Wilhelm. During the Seven Years' War in 1758, Küstrin was besieged and shelled by Russian troops, but it could not be captured. During the Napoleonic Wars, the city was occupied by French troops from 1806 to 1814, who further expanded the fortress. In the 19th century, the fortress was again modernized to adapt to advancements in artillery. Its military use ended in 1920 after World War I. Towards the end of World War II, Küstrin was again declared a fortress in 1945 and was almost completely destroyed during the fighting. After the war, many fortress structures were demolished or blown up for material recovery. Since the 1990s, parts of the fortress complex have been undergoing restoration.

The Ravelin August-Wilhelm is located in Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in the Lubusz Voivodeship (Lubuskie) in northwestern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 18 meters above sea level.
