Küstrin Fortress-Hornwerk
The Küstrin-Hornwerk Fortress is a historic defensive structure located in Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in the Polish Lubusz Voivodeship. As part of the larger Küstrin Fortress, it played an important role in securing the region and stands today as a testament to past military architecture.
History+
The Küstrin Fortress was built in the second half of the 16th century to protect the residential city of Küstrin. During the Thirty Years' War and the Swedish occupation from 1631, further expansion of the fortress began. Between 1631 and 1688, the Hornwerk was also constructed, strengthening the defenses on the right bank of the Oder. After World War I, the military use of the fortress ended in 1920. Towards the end of World War II, in 1945, Küstrin was again declared a fortress, leading to its almost complete destruction. After the war, many of the already damaged fortress structures were further decimated by demolitions and dismantling for material recovery.
