Küstrin Fortress-Fort Tschernow

The Küstrin Fortress, which included Fort Tschernow, was constructed in the second half of the 16th century to protect the residential city of Küstrin. Its use as a fortress ceased in 1920 after World War I. Towards the end of World War II, in 1945, Küstrin was again declared a fortress, leading to its almost complete destruction. After the war, the already damaged fortress structures were further decimated by demolitions and salvage operations. Since the 1990s, parts of the fortress complexes have been undergoing restoration, while other outer works have been left to decay. Fort Tschernow was built between 1882 and 1885 as a Biehler-type standard fort. However, by the time of its completion, it was already considered militarily obsolete, as it could not withstand modern high-explosive shells, and artillery now had a range that allowed for direct shelling of Küstrin.

Fort Tschernow is situated in Czarnów, a district of the Lubuskie Voivodeship in the Północno-Zachodni region of Poland, at an elevation of approximately 47 meters above sea level.
