Küstrin Fortress-Fort Säpzig

The Küstrin Fortress, to which Fort Säpzig belongs, was constructed in the second half of the 16th century to protect the residential city of Küstrin. The original earthworks were reinforced with masonry over time, and the fortress was completed in 1568. In the 19th century, the fortress was expanded again due to the development of long-range artillery. As the final construction phase, four outer forts, including Fort Säpzig in 1887, were built between 1882 and 1887 following the Biehler unified fort system. Ironically, these forts were already militarily obsolete upon their completion, as they could not withstand the impact of high-explosive shells, and the range of artillery allowed for direct shelling of Küstrin. Its use as a fortress ended in 1920 after World War I. Towards the end of World War II, Küstrin was again declared a fortress in 1945, leading to its almost complete destruction. After the war, many fortress structures, including Fort Säpzig, were further damaged by demolitions and dismantling for material recovery.

Fort Säpzig is situated in Żabice (Säpzig) in the Lubusz Voivodeship, Northwestern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 65 m above sea level.

Visitors today have the opportunity to explore Fort Säpzig. It is an accessible relic of the former Küstrin Fortress.
