Küstrin Fortress-Fort Neues Werk

The origins of Küstrin Fortress date back to the 16th century, when John of Brandenburg-Küstrin established his residence there and began constructing fortifications in 1537. Initially, earthworks were built, which, however, had to be reinforced due to floods. Between 1553 and 1568, masonry bastions and gates were therefore erected. Over the centuries, the fortress was repeatedly expanded and modernized, especially after the Thirty Years' War and during the French occupation in the early 19th century. The independent Fort "Neues Werk" was finally built between 1863 and 1872 at the then Küstrin-Neustadt train station, today's Kostrzyn train station. The military use of Küstrin Fortress ended in 1920. In World War II, Küstrin was again declared a fortress area in 1945 and almost completely destroyed in the subsequent battles. After the war, many of the damaged fortress structures were demolished or blown up to obtain building materials.

Fort Neues Werk is located in Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in the Lubuskie Voivodeship (Lebus), in northwestern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 19 m above sea level.

Today, Fort Neues Werk can be visited and offers visitors an insight into the former fortress architecture.
