The Fort can be visited

The Küstrin Fortress-Bastion Philipp is a historic bulwark that was once part of the mighty Küstrin Fortress. Located in Kostrzyn (Küstrin) in the Polish Lubuskie (Lebus) region, this bastion bears witness to a turbulent history and the strategic importance of the area at the confluence of the Oder and Warta rivers.

History+

The origins of the fortifications in Küstrin date back to the 13th century, with the strategically favorable location at the Oder crossing playing an important role early on. After 1535, when Johann von Brandenburg-Küstrin made the city his residence, the expansion into a fortress began. Between 1537 and 1543, initial earthworks were constructed, which were later reinforced with massive masonry from 1553 to 1568. The fortress, completed in 1568, included several bastions, among them Bastion Philipp. During the Thirty Years' War and the Seven Years' War, Küstrin played a significant role, was besieged, and burned down in 1758, though it was not captured. During the Napoleonic Wars, the fortress was also contested and occupied by French troops. In the 19th century, further expansion took place to meet the new demands of artillery. Military use ended in 1920, and parts of the fortress were demolished during the interwar period. At the end of World War II, Küstrin was again declared a fortress and almost completely destroyed during the fighting. After the war, further fortress structures were blown up or dismantled for material recovery. Since the 1990s, the facilities in the old town, including Bastion Philipp, have been undergoing restoration.
