The remains of the fortress can be visited

The Krakra Fortress, a significant medieval complex, rises on a small rocky plateau in the southwestern Bulgarian city of Pernik. Its polygonal outlines and walls, up to two meters thick, bear witness to a defensive construction that harmoniously blends into the natural relief of the landscape.

History+

Archaeological findings indicate that a fortification existed at this strategically important location as early as the 6th to 5th century BC. The current Krakra Fortress is dated to the time of Khan Omurtag (814–831). However, it experienced its heyday under the Bulgarian warlord Boyar Krakra Pernishki, who lived in the 10th and 11th centuries. He ruled the fortress, the settlement of Pernik, and 35 other fortresses in the surrounding area. The Krakra Fortress played a decisive role in repelling Byzantine attacks and withstood two sieges in 1004 and 1016, thereby saving medieval Pernik from destruction. During excavations, not only remains of residential buildings but also the foundations of three churches were discovered: the ruler's church, a large three-aisled basilica, and a two-story church with a crypt. A unique find is the silver seal of Tsar Petar (927–969), the only known seal of a ruler from this era.

Location+

The Krakra Fortress is located in Pernik, in the district and region of Pernik in Bulgaria, at an altitude of approx. 738 meters above sea level.
