The Fortress of Koroni, an imposing historical structure, perches on a hill above the eponymous town on the Peloponnese in Greece. Its strategic location and long history make it a fascinating testament to past eras.
History+
The origins of the fortress date back to the 6th or 7th century when it was built upon the remains of the ancient Messenian city of Asine. Throughout the entire Byzantine era, it played an important role. In 1206, the Venetians took Koroni and utilized the complex as a significant supply center. In 1500, the castle fell to the Turks under Bayazit Pasha and remained under Ottoman control until 1686. After a brief Venetian reconquest in 1715, when the Venetians left the Peloponnese, it once again fell into Turkish hands and was only liberated in 1828 by the French General Maison.
