Fortress Koblenz-Werk Pleitenberg

The Pleitenberg work was part of the Prussian Fortress of Koblenz and belonged to the Oberehrenbreitstein system. Built in the 1820s, the work was demolished in 1927. Only the hangar remains of the work, which is located in today's Niederberg district of Koblenz. It was situated in an advanced line to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the mountain of the same name.

The Pleitenberg work was built from 1827 to 1830 in the north of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress as a defensible powder magazine and was last modified in 1891. Together with Fort Rheineck, the work secured the plateau in front of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress to the north. The gap between the two works was filled by a connecting line consisting of earthworks and concrete fortifications built in 1914/15.

After the First World War, this facility, like the other Koblenz fortifications, had to be de-fortified in execution of Article 180 of the Treaty of Versailles. The plan was to breach and flatten the wall and to fill the ditch with an embankment. The powder magazine (also called hangar) was to be exposed and later used as a dwelling. The de-fortification work on Pleitenberg began on May 13 and was reported completed on June 30, 1927.

Later, a private individual from Niederberg, who wanted to set up a chicken farm and living quarters here, applied for the transfer of the remains of the work. However, the city of Ehrenbreitstein rejected the application on the grounds that it first wanted to await the decision regarding the planned establishment of a Reichsehrenmal (Imperial Memorial) on Ehrenbreitstein and for this reason wanted to preserve the entire plateau for the time being.

The hangar of the work, however, remained and was used as living space for many years, after which the building stood empty and was left to decay. As part of the Federal Garden Show 2011, the Bleidenberg playground was built on the site. The idea came from the Koblenz Youth Council and was built by the Schelhorn engineering office. Therefore, on the "BuGa-Mitbautag" (June 29, 2010), the Youth Council helped build some objects. The hangar, which is integrated into the playground, could thus be saved.
