The Groenlo Fortress, once a significant defensive structure, is located in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. As a historic border town, it played a crucial role, especially during the Eighty Years' War, and was the scene of several important sieges.
History+
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Groenlo developed into a powerful fortress. Its strategic location meant it was repeatedly contested during the Eighty Years' War. In 1597, Maurice of Nassau succeeded in capturing the city. Just nine years later, in 1606, Spanish troops under Spinola recaptured the fortress. One of the most brilliant military actions of that era was the siege and conquest by Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik in 1627, an event lauded by contemporaries such as Hugo de Groot and Joost van den Vondel. Groenlo held political weight as one of the voting cities of the "Quartier Zutphen". Between 1672 and 1674, the city was occupied by the Bishop of Münster.
