Fredriksten Fortress

Museum

Fredriksten Fortress majestically overlooks the Norwegian city of Halden and stands as an impressive testament to military architecture. Originally built for protection against Swedish invasions, it is among Norway's most significant historical structures and is closely linked to decisive moments in Scandinavian history.

History+

The origins of Fredriksten Fortress date back to 1660, when King Frederik III of Denmark and Norway ordered the construction of a defensive complex to guard against Swedish attacks. Construction began in 1661 according to plans by the Dutch engineering officer Willem Coucheron and continued until 1701. A dramatic event occurred in the autumn of 1718 during a Swedish siege, when King Charles XII of Sweden lost his life here. The siege concluded in January 1719 with a disastrous retreat of the Swedish troops, known as the Death March of the Carolinians. Following the dissolution of the personal union with Sweden in 1905, the fortress lost its military significance for Norway's border defense.

Fredriksten Fortress is situated in Halden, a city in the Østfold region of Eastern Norway (Østlandet). It lies at an elevation of approximately 89 meters above sea level, offering a strategically advantageous position.
