The Fortress can be visited

Christiansholm Fortress, a prominent historical structure, once served to protect the city of Kristiansand. This impressive complex, situated on a former island, is now a popular destination for visitors wishing to delve into the history of Norwegian coastal defense.

History+

The construction of Christiansholm Fortress was completed in 1672. It was an integral part of the defense strategy that King Christian IV had already devised when Kristiansand was founded in 1641. The design of the complex originated from Quartermaster General Willem Coucheron. Originally built on a small island, about 100 meters from the mainland, the fortress is now accessible via a land connection. Its only military test came in 1807 during the Napoleonic Wars, when it successfully repelled attacks by the English fleet commanded by HMS Spencer. In June 1872, the fortress was finally decommissioned.
