Bohus Fortress

Construction of Bohus Fortress began in 1308 under Norwegian King Håkon V Magnusson. Initially built of wood, it quickly developed into one of Scandinavia's strongest stone fortifications and played a central role in relations between Norway and Sweden. It served as a court and residence for the district governor. The fortress was the scene of important historical events, including Magnus Eriksson's declaration of majority in 1333 and King Albrecht's imprisonment in 1389. Despite numerous sieges, including six Swedish attacks during the Northern Seven Years' War (1563–1570), Bohus was never captured. A spectacular event was the so-called "Swedish Blow" in 1566, when Norwegians blew up the Red Tower, which had been captured by the Swedes, along with its garrison. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Bohus fell to Sweden. A final heavy siege occurred in 1678 by Norwegian troops. In the 18th century, the fortress lost its military significance and was temporarily used as a prison, with Thomas Leopold as its most famous inmate. From 1789, it served as a quarry until further destruction was prohibited in 1838. Extensive restoration work began in 1898 and continues to this day.

Bohus Fortress is located in Kungälv, in the district of Kungälv, in the Västra Götaland region of Sweden. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 39 m above sea level.

The ruins of Bohus Fortress are accessible to visitors and can be explored. It is a popular excursion destination, especially during the summer months.
