The Fortress of Berat, also known as Kalaja e Beratit, is an impressive historical complex that rises majestically above the city of Berat in Albania. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction, making it a fascinating testament to past eras.

History+

The origins of the fortress date back a long time. In 200 BC, the complex was burned down by the Romans. However, the fortress was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded: In the 5th century under the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II, in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I, and in the 13th century under Michael I Komnenos Doukas, a cousin of the Byzantine emperor and ruler of the Despotate of Epirus, it underwent further expansions.
