Bahnhofskaserne Fortness (Minden)

The Bahnhofskaserne (Station Barracks) in the East Westphalian city of Minden was built in 1869 for transient troops in the immediate vicinity of Minden's train station on the right bank of the Weser river and is a protected monument.
Minden was developed into a Prussian fortress from 1827 to 1873. The train station was located on the right bank of the Weser and thus outside the actual city center. There was enough space here for the Bahnhofskaserne to be built in 1869. This happened after the Prussian annexation of the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866, which changed the station's function from a border station to an inland station with a transfer function. This change also affected the transient troops. The Bahnhofskaserne could accommodate up to 600 soldiers, which significantly relieved the pressure of billeting soldiers in the Minden fortress - at that time often with private individuals - in the city. After the First World War, from 1919, the building was used by the city of Minden.
In 1991, the building was entered into the list of monuments of the city of Minden.
Building+
The building is a simple, three-winged brick structure with three stories and four-story corner towers. The simple facade of the brick building is strictly structured. The round-arch windows have outer sandstone surrounds as frames.
Use of the Building+
After the fortress was abolished, part of the function of the Bahnhofskaserne ceased. It continued to be used for military purposes until after World War I. During the Third Reich, a forced labor camp was built in the immediate vicinity. In the 1950s, the barracks were rented by the city of Minden, which established an emergency shelter for homeless people here. Currently, the future use is under discussion.
