History+

The origins of Antwerp's city fortifications date back to the Spanish city wall in 1830. After Belgian independence, the country's defense was reorganized, with Antwerp designated as a central bulwark against potential attacks, especially from France. As part of this realignment, an initial ring of eight forts, known as the Brialmont Forts, was built starting in 1859. Given the advancements in artillery during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which showed that the existing forts were too close to the city, further expansion became necessary. Between 1878 and 1905, additional forts were constructed, including Fort Steendorp from 1882 onwards. A law in 1906 led to the planning of an even more comprehensive defense ring with eleven new forts and twelve redoubts, whose construction began in 1909. These forts, including Fort Steendorp, were built from unreinforced concrete 2.5 meters thick and were designed to withstand cannons up to a caliber of 28 cm. However, the rapid development of weapon technology, particularly the introduction of high-explosive shells and rapid-fire guns, constantly presented new challenges to the planners, as the construction of the forts often could not keep pace with the destructive power of the new weapons.
