The Fortress Antwerp-Fort de Lauwershoek is a historical structure that was once part of the extensive defense system around the Belgian port city of Antwerp. Located in Lauwershoek in East Flanders, it bears witness to the military engineering of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History+

The Fortress Antwerp, a comprehensive defense system, was built between 1859 and 1914 in two rings around the city, extending over 95 kilometers. The necessity of a centralized defense for Belgium, especially after Napoleon III's rise to power in 1851, led to the construction of an initial belt of forts around Antwerp. Following the law of 1859, Antwerp was declared a "National Reduit," a last bastion intended to hold out until allied assistance arrived. This included the construction of eight Brialmont forts. However, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 demonstrated that these forts were too close to the city, as artillery could now operate from greater distances. Consequently, additional forts and redoubts were built to extend the defense line and protect the Scheldt. The rapid development of weaponry, particularly high-explosive shells and rapid-fire guns, necessitated constant adaptation of the defensive installations. A law from 1906 led to the construction of eleven new forts and twelve redoubts, including Fort de Lauwershoek, which was built from 1909 using unreinforced concrete designed to withstand cannons up to 28 cm caliber.
