Fortress Antwerp-Fort de Haasdonk

The Fortress of Antwerp was an extensive military defense system consisting of two concentric belts of forts around the port city of Antwerp. Constructed between 1859 and 1914, the entire system spanned a length of 95 kilometers. Antwerp's original city fortifications, until Belgian independence in 1830, included the Spanish city wall and were bounded to the south by the Southern Castle and to the north by the Northern Fort. As early as 1584, during the Eighty Years' War, the forts Liefkenshoek, De Perel, St. Maria, and St. Filips were built by the Duke of Parma to cut off Dutch supplies to Antwerp. After Belgium's independence in 1830, the country's defense served to secure against France, with Antwerp acting as one of twenty fortified cities. In the process, the defense of the Scheldt was also ensured by several forts. By the mid-19th century, particularly after 1851, the necessity of a centralized defense for Belgium became evident given France's military strength. This led to the construction of an initial ring of forts around Antwerp, originally conceived as earthen rampart palisades and later reinforced with stone. A law from 1859 designated Antwerp as a national redoubt, a last stronghold intended to hold out until British aid arrived. This plan envisioned a ring of eight Brialmont forts, built starting in 1859. However, the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 showed that these forts were too close to the city, leading to the construction of additional forts and an expansion of the Scheldt defense. Between 1878 and 1905, further forts and redoubts were erected to strengthen the defensive line and flood the polders. Due to the rapid development of new weapon technologies, a law was passed in 1906 that stipulated the demolition of the Brialmont rampart and the construction of a new security ring with eleven forts and twelve redoubts. Construction of these new forts, including Fort Haasdonk, began in 1909. They were built from 2.5-meter-thick unreinforced concrete to withstand cannons up to 28 cm caliber.

The Fortress Antwerp-Fort de Haasdonk is situated in Haasdonk, a district of the municipality of Beveren in the province of Oost-Vlaanderen (East Flanders) in the region of Vlaanderen (Flanders), Belgium. It is located at an elevation of approximately 10 meters above sea level.
