Almus Fortress

The ancient city of Almus, whose remains are found in the present-day Kaletata district of Lom, is mentioned in various historical sources and is also depicted on Western European maps from the 16th to 18th centuries. Between 1986 and 1990, a team of archaeologists from the Historical Museum in Lom conducted extensive investigations. Approximately 70 meters of the western fortress wall were uncovered, measuring 2.20 meters wide and originally about 200 meters long. The entire fortress complex had the shape of an irregular pentagon with round corner towers and covered an area of about 4.1 hectares. The excavations yielded numerous artifacts from antiquity and the Middle Ages, which are now displayed in the Lom Historical Museum.

The Almus Fortress is situated in the city of Lom, in the Lom district, Montana region, Bulgaria, at an elevation of approximately 44 meters above sea level.
