Ali Pasha Fortress (Kalaja e Ali Pashë Tepelenës)
The Ali Pasha Fortress, also known as Kalaja e Ali Pashë Tepelenës, is a historic fortification strategically located at the mouth of the Vivar Canal into the Ionian Sea. Its origins date back to the early 18th century, but its current form is attributed to the powerful Ali Pasha, who had it renovated around 1800.
History+
Although the fortress is often associated with Ali Pasha and its renovation around 1800, it existed earlier. Venetian maps from 1718 show the complex, indicating an earlier construction. It is believed that the fortress was originally owned by the Corfiot Gonemi family before it came into the possession of Ali Pasha, who then extensively restored it.

The Ali Pasha Fortress is situated in Butrint, a district of Saranda in the Vlora region of Albania. It lies directly at the mouth of the Vivar Canal into the Ionian Sea, approximately four kilometers west of Butrint, at an elevation of about 2 meters above sea level.
