Fortress Boyen

The construction of Fort Boyen took place between 1847 and 1855, at the suggestion of Prussian Minister of War Hermann von Boyen, who convinced King Frederick William IV of the necessity of this edifice. The fortress, covering an area of approximately 100 hectares, was designed in the shape of a seven-pointed star and included bastions, powder gates, moats, barracks, and other necessary buildings. It served as a central component of the Prussian fortifications and was never captured throughout its history. Originally, the fortress had four gates, with the Water Gate being closed during the construction of the railway line. The remaining gates are the Lötzen Gate, the Rastenburg Gate, and the Powder Gate.

Fort Boyen is situated in Giżycko (Lötzen) in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (formerly Pomerania) in northern Poland, at an elevation of approximately 115 meters above sea level. Its strategic position on an isthmus between Lake Kisajno, the southernmost part of Lake Mamry, and Lake Niegocin was crucial for its military significance.

Visitors can explore Fort Boyen today. Since 1993, the “Club of Lovers of Fort Boyen” has been dedicated to the renovation and tourist accessibility of the complex. The site includes, among other things, a historical museum and gastronomic facilities. The former youth hostel has been converted into an exhibition gallery. Additionally, an open-air theater has been established in the fortress moat, and the fortress regularly hosts various events.
