Erfurt Cathedral

The origins of Erfurt Cathedral date back to the 8th century, when Boniface initiated the founding of a bishopric in Erfurt around 742. The first documented mention of a church occurred in 1117. In 1154, construction began on a late Romanesque basilica on the Domberg, which was usable by 1170. A consecration of the church is recorded for 1182. In the 13th century, Gothic extensions began, including a new choir consecrated in 1290. The central tower, housing the famous Gloriosa bell, was completed before 1307. Between 1370 and 1372, the extended High Choir, built on massive substructures known as Kavaten, was consecrated. In the 15th century, from 1455, the Romanesque nave was replaced by a late Gothic new building to create more space for the congregation. The cathedral experienced changing ownership during the Thirty Years' War, and between 1697 and 1706, the Baroque high altar was installed in the choir.

Erfurt Cathedral is located in the city of Erfurt, in the urban district of Erfurt in Thuringia, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 212 meters above sea level.

Today, Erfurt Cathedral is an active sacred building and can be visited by the public. It serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Erfurt and is a central place of religious and cultural life in the region.
