Élysée Palace

The construction of the Élysée Palace took place between 1718 and 1722 according to the designs of the architect Armand-Claude Mollet for the Count of Évreux. After the Count's death in 1753, the Marquise de Pompadour, King Louis XV's mistress, acquired the property. She had the interior extensively redesigned and the garden expanded. After her death in 1764, the palace passed into the possession of Louis XV. Over the years, the building changed hands several times, including bankers and members of the nobility. During the French Revolution, it temporarily served as a warehouse. In 1805, Prince and Marshal Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law, bought the palace and undertook significant renovations, including the main staircase and ballroom, which are still named after him today. Napoleon himself later used the property and signed his abdication there in 1814. After the Bourbon Restoration, the palace again came into their possession. From 1848, the Élysée Palace was decreed the official residence of the presidents of the Second Republic, and since 1873, it has been the definitive official seat of the French head of state. The Élysée Treaty was also signed here in 1963.

The Élysée Palace is located in Paris, in the department of Paris, in the Île-de-France region, France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 31 meters above sea level.

Today, the Élysée Palace serves as the official residence of the President of the French Republic. The President's private residence is located in the eastern wing of the palace.
