St. Mang

As early as the mid-11th century, a church dedicated to Saint Magnus existed on this site. The actual foundation of the Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery took place in 1138 by the Regensburg canon Gebhard and the cleric Paul von Bernried. They endowed the monastery according to the rules of the Augustinian Canons Regular of St. Mary in Porto Fuori near Ravenna, contributing extensive lands and vineyards. The foundation was placed under papal protection in 1139 and developed into a pilgrimage site. In 1146, construction began on the monastery and church, integrating the old St. Magnus Church. An altar consecration in honor of the principal patron, Saint Andrew, took place in 1156. Saint Magnus remained the second patron. The monastery faced economic difficulties in 1161, which were resolved by Bishop Hartwig II. At the beginning of the 15th century, the historian Andreas von Regensburg worked in the monastery. During the Thirty Years' War, the monastery buildings were completely destroyed as they were located in an unprotected military area. Reconstruction took place in the 18th century. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization.

The buildings of the former Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery are located in the Regensburg district of Stadtamhof, on the northern edge of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof. The area lies north of the Danube arms and is easily accessible from the old town via the Stone Bridge. The European Canal runs north of the site, and the Regen River runs to the east.

Since 1975, the historic buildings have housed the Academy for Catholic Church Music. The ensemble is a protected monument and is designated as a listed building in Bavaria.
