The Castle can be visited
Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle stands prominently on an extinct volcanic cone in the heart of Edinburgh, representing one of Scotland's most significant historical fortresses. Its strategic location and rich history make it an indispensable testament to Scotland's past.
History+
The geological formation of Castle Rock, a basalt cone, dates back approximately 340 million years. Archaeological findings confirm settlement on the rock as early as the 9th century BC and continuous use from the 2nd century AD. The first confirmed documentary mention of a castle in Edinburgh appears in the 14th-century chronicle by John of Fordun, which links the death of King Malcolm III in 1093 to the castle. The oldest surviving structure, St. Margaret’s Chapel, dates to the early 12th century. Over the centuries, Edinburgh Castle was repeatedly besieged, destroyed, and rebuilt, particularly during the Scottish Wars of Independence. Since 1996, the castle has housed the famous Stone of Scone.
