Edelburg Castle

The Edelburg is a farmstead in the north of Hemer, which together with the neighboring building complex forms a district of the city. The complex is located on the Oese near the city limits of Menden at an altitude of 167 meters.

The first mention of the Edelburg (Erleborgh) dates back to 1375. It was probably a moated farm with a protective wall on the current site of the manor house. From the 16th century, the owners of the site also took over Brelen Castle in a forest area east of the Edelburg. Brelen was already one of three estates in Hemer belonging to Grafschaft Abbey in 1072. Around 1600, material from Brelen Castle was removed to build the current main building of Edelburg House. During this time, the estate was expanded into a moated castle, which it remained until the 19th century.

In the 18th century, the estate temporarily belonged to the Brabeck family. In 1902, Baron de Becker-Remy acquired the estate. His descendants still own the complex today. In 1957, a large part of the buildings were placed under monument protection.

In 1986, the Edelburg Riding Club was founded, which organizes an annual riding festival in summer. The riding facility is located in direct proximity to the manor house.

West of the B 7, the Edelburg industrial area has been located since 1982, where the headquarters of the faucet manufacturer Grohe was located for over 25 years. The group's main plant with over 1000 jobs is still located there.
