Dunguaire Castle
Dunguaire Castle is an imposing castle in Kinvara, in the Irish County Galway. As a typical 16th-century Tower House, it rises only a few meters above sea level and stands as a testament to the architecture of Irish gentlemen and landowners of that era.
History+
The origins of its name trace back to King Guaire of Connacht, who died in 662 and was renowned for his hospitality. The current Tower House was built around 1520 by the O'Hynes, descendants of Guaire. In the 17th century, it came into the possession of the Martyns of Galway, who inhabited it until the end of the century before it fell into disrepair. Extensive restoration was undertaken in 1924 by the surgeon Oliver St. John Gogarty, followed by further work under Lady Ampthill, who acquired it in 1954 and sold it in 1972. Since 1966, the castle has been open to the public.
